Gounod
Charles-François Gounod (1818-1893) was a French composer, known for his opera Faust. Gounod had no great theatrical success until his opera Faust (1859), based on the play by Goethe. This remains his best-known composition, and although it took a while to achieve renown, it became one of the most frequently staged operas of all time. Faust is a grand opera in five acts by Charles Gounod to a French libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré from Carré's play Faust et Marguerite.
